Is Quitting on Your Own Self-Detox Harmful?
Depending on the individual’s history of abuse and medical and physical conditions – the severity of detox effects will differ.
However, the risks of detox for all serious drug and alcohol users can be dangerous. Detox should never be attempted alone.
A sudden stop of drug and alcohol use can lead to seizures, heart attacks and strokes. In severe cases, unsupervised detox can even cause death.
Addiction Withdrawal Dangerous Symptoms
If attempting to withdraw from drugs or alcohol on your own, it is imperative to identify danger signs and symptoms of withdrawal early. If any of these symptoms are experienced, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
Here are some drug withdrawal and alcohol withdrawal warning signs:
Difficulty breathing
Excessive sweating
Excessive nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Tremors
Confusion and/or depression
Fear and/or paranoia

Whole Person Addiction Recovery
We use Mindfulness for Relapse Prevention and other whole person evidence-based therapies. This includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, yoga and more.
Individuals recovering from substance abuse report both negative aspects (posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms requiring dual diagnosis treatment) – as well as positive changes.
Positive changes resulting from addiction recovery are described as posttraumatic addiction-related growth.
‘Addiction recovery personal growth‘ refers to the growth that an individual can experience as a result of the recovery process. Recovery from trauma and substance abuse can be an important ‘search for meaning‘.
A Search for Meaning and Addiction-Related Growth
Although no one would choose trauma, substance abuse and addiction as a pathway to personal growth – there is tremendous potential for personal growth in the recovery process.
Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl – based on his own experience – argued that we cannot avoid suffering. However, he felt that we can choose how to cope with trauma or tragedy. It can be possible to find meaning in tragedy – and move forward with renewed purpose.
Frankl was heavily influenced by his personal experiences of suffering and loss in Nazi concentration camps. He believed that our primary drive in life is not pleasure (as Freud maintained) – but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.
Successful long-lasting recovery from addiction is associated with positive changes in personal meaning-making and inner spirituality.
Lasting recovery from substance abuse requires a total re-assessment of habitual behaviors and habitual thinking patterns.
Addiction recovery (and recovery from traumatic events) requires a greater degree of self-knowledge and a leap into the unknown of more positive choices.
For many, this also results in inner spiritual growth.

Importance of Co-occurring Disorders (Dual Diagnosis) Addiction Treatment
According to SAMHSA’s 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) (PDF | 3.4 MB), approximately 7.9 million adults in the United States had co-occurring disorders (dual diagnosis) in 2014.
Individuals with co-occurring disorders are best served through integrated dual diagnosis addiction treatment. With integrated treatment, practitioners can address mental and substance use disorders at the same time. This provides better addiction recovery outcomes – and the best chance for life-long recovery.
If you or a loved one are suffering from addiction – as well as PTSD, depression, trauma or other mental health issue: Please know that help is available. We provide comprehensive, holistic and integrated addiction recovery treatment.
High Functioning Alcoholic and Addict Recovery
High Functioning Alcoholics and High Functional Addicts rarely seek help on their own. They see no problems in their life or with their relationships.
Interventions may be the only possibility to reach a functional addict or alcoholic – and get them into treatment.
If you are in a relationship with a functional alcoholic or addict – you need to take steps to protect yourself. Family recovery programs are essential to ongoing well-being for the family of alcoholics. If there are children involved, they must be protected.
A functional alcoholic or functional addict parent may not physically neglect or abuse their child. However, emotional neglect will occur and leave significant scars.

Mindfulness and Holistic Addiction Recovery
Long-term addiction recovery is dependent on discarding habitual behaviors – and instead engaging in new sober activities. Mindfulness means having the internal focus to be quietly aware of your own thoughts and impulses – without judgment or acting on the impulses.
New Start Recovery Solutions uses a whole person approach to healing, addiction recovery and wellness. This includes mindfulness.
Our clients are introduced to new habits, rituals, and wellness techniques for mind, body and spirit. Holistic recovery in the residential program at New Start Recovery Solutions includes core addiction treatment along with mindfulness practices, yoga and positive psychology.
