What is PTSD?
For more details, see What is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. This causes trauma. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety; as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
PTSD is often experienced by military veterans, first responders, police officers, medical professionals and more. Anyone on the front lines of dealing with life or death decisions, disasters and high stress crisis or combat situations are particularly at risk.
Traumatic experiences are unique to each individual and often involve a threat to life or safety.
Situations creating a feeling of being overwhelmed and isolated can result in trauma. Trauma does not need to involve actual physical harm. The more frightened and helpless feelings that are generated – the more likely trauma will occur.
PTSD develops in about 1 in 3 individuals who experience trauma.
We all react to trauma in different ways. There is a wide range of physical and emotional reactions to trauma. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to think, feel, or respond. Do not judge your own reactions or those of other people.
Responses to trauma are NORMAL reactions to ABNORMAL events.
Most individuals experiencing traumatic events have temporary difficulty adjusting and coping. If trauma symptoms get worse – or last more than 3 months and interfere with day-to-day functioning – then PTSD is probably a factor.
Getting effective treatment after PTSD symptoms develop is critical to reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life.
