Helping Others with Mental Illness and Addiction
“Just knowing that I might be able to help someone in their journey through life is enough to make me so happy.
My purpose is to be of service to men and women struggling with PTSD, mental illness and addiction – and that’s an awesome service.”
Understanding Trauma and Addiction
Clint Malarchuk, Mental Health Advocate
“It felt like a kick to the mask. There was no pain, but I pulled my helmet off. And then I saw the blood.” — Clint Malarchuk, from his book,
“A Matter of Inches: How I Survived in the Crease and Beyond”
After a traumatic injury and near death experience during a hockey game, Clint Malarchuk was back on the ice and skating professionally in ten days. But the emotional impact from the near fatal accident was just beginning.
For months, Clint continued his career as if nothing had happened. However, he did not receive trauma counseling and never took the time to process his injury and near-death experience. As a result, internal stress increased and he began to ‘self-medicate’ with alcohol.
After the accident, Clint struggled with dual diagnosis (co-occurring disorders) addiction. He experienced obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety, insomnia, nightmares — all of which were made worse by alcoholism.
He remained in pro hockey in the International Hockey League. As his pro hockey performance declined, he became a coach.
Malarchuk said after he realized he was not alone and accepted his PTSD diagnosis, he cried for three consecutive days. But Clint had found his purpose.
“My purpose is to be of service to men and women struggling with PTSD, mental illness and addiction – and that’s an awesome service.”

Tommie Trevino, UC Davis
As a certified drug and alcohol counselor – Tommie Trevino is an integral part of the emergency department’s approach to treating substance abuse; especially opioid addiction.
A typical day for Tommie Trevino begins at 7 a.m. in UC Davis Medical Center’s emergency department (ED) – as he reaches out to five to eight patients who have come in suffering from withdrawal, psychosis, overdose or other drug or alcohol-related conditions.
Trevino seizes the life-and-death moment to motivate and educate those in need of treatment on how they can break the cycle of addiction. “Alcohol and drug addiction is not really well understood,” Trevino said. “It has a stigma. There is a real need for patience and understanding, and people seeing addiction as a disease rather than someone with a problem.”
Trevino is an integral part of the emergency department’s approach to treating substance abuse, especially opioid addiction.
“When patients come to the ED for drugs or alcohol, it’s one of the worst times of their lives,” Trevino said. “They’re depressed, afraid and ashamed and say that they just want to die. I’m here to motivate them and provide a treatment plan with options and very clear next steps on where and how to access well-established resources in the community to further guide and support their efforts to change….I hear from patients who I’ve counseled. It feels good knowing that I helped them and their lives.”
Letting Go and Moving Forward with Mindfulness
“You only have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” ~ Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
New Start Recovery Solutions is located in San Jose in the heart of the Bay Area. We have affordable, confidential and effective addiction rehab.
Mindfulness is developing the internal focus to be quietly aware of your own thoughts and impulses – without judgment. And, without acting on habitual impulses.
Although it is definitely not easy – positive growth and positive changes are possible even from the most tragic of circumstances and trauma. Mental health and balance can be restored.
Lasting recovery from substance abuse requires a total re-assessment of habitual behaviors and habitual thinking patterns. Learning and applying mindfulness is invaluable in this process. Addiction recovery (and recovery from traumatic events) require enhanced self-knowledge – and mindfulness is an effective tool. Creating a peaceful and safe space for a leap into the unknown of more positive choices is needed. Mindfulness enables that change. And for most, the process of gaining inner peace and self knowledge also results in spiritual growth.
