Family Systems In Addiction Interventions
Most families struggle to know what to do when faced with addiction and mental health issues. It is important to involve the entire family in recovery planning.
For example, if a family Codependency exists – the chance of relapse is increased.
“It is important to understand the complex role that families can play in substance abuse treatment. They can be a source of help to the treatment process, but they also must manage the consequences of the addicted individual’s addictive behavior. Individual family members are concerned about the addicted individual’s substance abuse, but they also have their own goals and issues. Providing services to the whole family can improve treatment effectiveness.” From Substance Abuse Treatment and Family Therapy
A family intervention can strengthen each family member as they deal with their own issues that are the result of the person’s addiction. Meeting as a group gives family members the support they need and helps resolve feelings. When sitting down together with your loved one, family members show a cohesiveness that can get attention better than a one-on-one meeting.
In a family intervention, the focus is not solely on the loved one. Discussion is also directed at changing the behaviors of family members that have contributed to the situation. In this case, everyone experiences change after the intervention. Each family member must see where they are responsible for helping the loved one continue in their destructive behavior; and how they must change in order for the addicted individual to change.
David Burke provides experienced and compassionate interventions in the Northern California area for drug and alcohol abuse.David schedules interventions in San Jose, Silicon Valley, Sacramento and the surrounding areas.
Facing addiction is not an easy situation to deal with – having a professional conduct the intervention is advantageous to making the intervention successful.
The reason why intervention is because it serves to be a life-saving measure is because it is a process that can interrupt a potentially life-threatening addiction. Another reason why intervention could be an effective solution when a loved one is suffering with a drug or alcohol addiction is because an individual with this type of a problem will often become delusional; when an addict reaches this point, they may not have the ability to have any real insight into how serious their substance abuse problem has become.
