In family systems therapy a therapist would look for – and attempt to change – negative patterns of communication in families dealing with substance abuse. The family role structures that are required for stability in families with substance abuse (Steinglass et al. 1987) are also explored.

A major goal of family therapy in substance abuse treatment is prevention. It is important to prevent substance abuse from moving to other generations. Multiple studies show that if one person in a family abuses alcohol or drugs – the remaining family members are at increased risk of developing substance abuse problems.
