Every May, Americans across the country come together to celebrate Military Appreciation Month.
Remembering the Sacrifices and Contributions of our Military
Military Appreciation Month is a time set aside to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of those who have served in the U.S. military. This month-long celebration includes several important dates, including:
Each of these days has its own unique significance, but they all share a common theme of honoring and thanking our military personnel for their service and dedication to our country.
- Loyalty Day (May 1st)
- Victory in Europe (VE) Day (May 8th)
- Armed Forces Day (May 15th)
- Memorial Day (May 31st)
Honoring the Fallen
The origins of Military Appreciation Month can be traced back to the end of World War II.
President Harry Truman signed a proclamation declaring the first Armed Forces Day in 1950. Since then, this celebration has expanded to include the entire month of May and has become an important way for Americans to show their support and gratitude for our military personnel.
There are many reasons why we celebrate Military Appreciation Month. For one, it is a way to recognize the tremendous sacrifices that our military personnel and their families make on a daily basis. Whether they are serving overseas in combat zones, or stationed at home to protect our borders, these men and women put their lives on the line every day to defend our freedom and way of life.
In addition, Military Appreciation Month is an opportunity to remember and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. From the Revolutionary War to the present day, countless Americans have given their lives in defense of our nation. And it is important that we never forget their sacrifice.
Finally, Military Appreciation Month is a chance to show our support for our military personnel and their families. Whether it is through donations to military charities, volunteering at local veterans’ organizations – or simply thanking a service member for their service – there are many ways that we can show our appreciation and support for those who have served our country.

- Volunteer at a local veterans’ organization, such as the American Legion or the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
- Send care packages to troops serving overseas, or write letters of support to military personnel and their families.
- Fly the American flag outside your home or business to show your patriotism and support for our military personnel.
- Thank a service member for their service, either in person or through a letter or email.
No matter how you choose to celebrate Military Appreciation Month – the most important thing is to show your support and gratitude for our military personnel and their families.
These brave men and women have sacrificed so much to defend our freedom and way of life, and they deserve our utmost respect and appreciation. So let us all come together this May to honor our heroes and show them how much we truly appreciate their service and sacrifice.

Stages of PTSD Healing
If you or a friend or loved one are experiencing PTSD – it is helpful to understand the stages of development and healing.
Shock Stage
“Did this really happen?” Withdrawal, hypervigilance and easily startled are common reactions in the shock stage. Some are able to recognize PTSD symptoms immediately. For others, it may take some time.
Denial Stage
“I am fine!” Many individuals do not accept any limitation easily. They experience strong feelings brought on by memories of the traumatic event, but will attempt to avoid the difficult emotions. Often, avoidance is done unconsciously. This is an especially vulnerable time when many begin to use use alcohol or other substances to numb difficult emotions or memories.
Short Term Recovery Stage
An adjustment to everyday life and return to a sense of normalcy is achieved. However, the underlying trauma is not resolved. Nightmares and intrusive thoughts continue to make life difficult. Alcohol and substance abuse may be present.
Long Term Recovery Stage
Individuals will continue to deal with the after-effects of trauma; including anxiety and nightmares. However with treatment, these symptoms can be reduced and eventually resolve. With treatment and support from professionals, family, and friends – those with PTSD can return to a calmer and sober life. Life can be good again!
