Drug and Alcohol Inpatient Rehab for Professionals
Professional impairment is the inability to practice according to accepted standards as a result of substance abuse or drug dependence (addiction).
New Start Recovery Solutions has residential (and outpatient addiction rehab treatment) for impaired professionals.
Impaired professionals are found in all professions. Any intense work environment with pressure to perform and frequent long work hours is at risk for development of substance abuse issues.
Professions that experience high levels of functional alcoholism and substance abuse include:
• Attorneys
• Doctors and Medical Professionals
• Airline Pilots and Flight Attendants
• First Responders
Dual Diagnosis Addiction Rehabs Northern California
New Start Recovery Solutions provides affordable inpatient dual diagnosis integrated substance abuse treatment in Northern California in the Bay Area, East Bay, Silicon Valley, Bangor and Chico.
Individuals rarely want to take the time needed for residential rehab and addiction recovery. It is easy to use the career and home as a reason to avoid getting help. However, the best chance for recovery is a permanent change in habitual behaviors.
Time, education and therapy are required to make permanent behavioral changes.

EAP Programs and New Start Recovery Solutions
New Start Recovery Solutions works with Employee Assistance Programs serving professionals and first responders needing detox and addiction rehab treatment. Our dual diagnosis rehab programs are trauma-informed and include treatment for PTSD, anxiety and more.
Dual diagnosis addiction treatment programs at New Start Recovery Solutions take into account the unique challenges, needs, and risks associated with being exposed to high levels of stress and/or trauma on a regular basis.
If the underlying causes of addiction are treated – PTSD, anxiety, ‘survivor guilt’ and more – then there is a very good prognosis of enjoying long-term recovery from trauma and substance abuse.
The sooner individuals get help, the sooner they can begin to work through negative emotions and address the issues that are contributing to substance abuse. Our high-quality addiction treatment program equips clients with the skills, techniques, strategies and support needed to cope with trauma and stress on a daily basis.
We assist clients in developing healthier and more effective ways of handling trauma moving forward.

What is a Functional (High Functioning) Alcoholic?
High Functioning Alcoholics are masters of deception – to themselves and others. Friends, co-workers and extended family often see ‘just an average person’.
High functioning alcoholics live in denial of their alcohol abuse and point to their career successes. But in private, alcoholic behaviors are fully active.
By any definition – functional alcoholics are true alcoholics. However, high functioning alcoholics do not fit the popular stereotype of a ‘down and out drunk’. The health effects of consuming large daily amounts of alcohol are extremely damaging – even when the effects are not immediately obvious.
“Our findings with regard to alcoholic subtypes should help dispel the popular notion of the ‘typical alcoholic … We find that … nearly 20 percent of alcoholics are high functioning and well-educated with good incomes.” Howard B. Moss, M.D., former NIAAA Associate Director for Clinical and Translational Research.
High Functioning Addicts – The Invisibly Addicted
High Pressure Careers Downside
Functioning addicts are often found in high stress and highly paid careers and professions.
The pressure of expectation for mental alertness and quick decision-making at all times can lead to amphetamine use. Over time, amphetamine users often find the need for sleep leads to opioid use.
The amphetamine and opioid use cycle slowly escalates to full drug addiction. The can happen quickly or can take years – depending on the individual.
Signs of substance abuse and addiction in functional addicts are not immediately evident. For some, addiction can coexist for a time with what seems to be a perfectly normal lifestyle.
High functioning addicts live in denial of drug abuse and point to their career successes. In private, addictive behavior patterns are fully active. The health effects of drug abuse are damaging and will become evident.

Work From Home Alcohol and Drug Abuse
The COVID-19 change to work from home (and ‘sheltering in place‘) has put all individuals and families in a situation of ongoing stress.
Alcohol Sales Increase in 2020
• Spike in alcohol sales alarmed health experts.
• Nielsen research reports that alcohol sales in stores were up 54% in late March.
• By late April 2020, online alcohol sales were up nearly 500% over last year.
• Increased drinking can make people even more vulnerable to respiratory diseases.
• Those with medical conditions known to be risk factors for COVID-19 should drink even less.
Increased alcohol consumption is known to increase depression.
Warning Signs of Addiction
• Occasional Alcohol or Substance Abuse to Relieve Stress
At the office, drinking or drugging at your desk was not well accepted. At home – there is little to no peer pressure for sobriety.
• Increased Alcohol or Substance Abuse as a Stress Coping Mechanism
Mid-day Margaritas may sound ‘romantic’ – but the reality is not like the happy song.
• Consequences Of Problem Drinking or Substance Abuse
Legal problems or DUI; increased isolation and relationship problems; brain fog; depression and anxiety.
• Noticeable Physical And Psychological Changes
Shaking hands in the morning; frequent heartburn; withdrawal symptoms when not using.
Mindfulness Whole Person Addiction Recovery
At New Start Recovery Solutions, Mindfulness instruction is an essential part of our dual diagnosis addiction treatment.
Mindfulness is an essential skill for our addiction recovery and relapse prevention programs.
Mindfulness provides skills and practices to loosen our identification with thoughts. This helps individuals to recognize that the content of a thought (and the resulting habitual emotions and triggers) are not absolute “truth.” By creating a space between emotional triggers and habitual reactions – individuals can create a permanent cognitive re-structuring away from self destructive and habitual addictive behaviors.
The Result?
Calmness, inner peace; and increasing compassion for self and others.
Many who practice mindfulness meditation experience a gradual and natural increase in calmness and gratitude. Another benefit of mindfulness meditation is personal growth and a deepening experience of personal spirituality.
