Why Addiction Intervention?
At New Start Recovery Solutions drug and alcohol rehab centers in East Bay and Bangor – we work very closely with the family and their loved ones in drug and alcohol interventions.
Most individuals who are considered for interventions are already heavily entrenched in their addictions. When addicted individuals have strong social support and access to good treatment, they’re more likely to engage in recovery.
This is how interventions help: by removing barriers to treatment and giving families a concrete plan for presenting recovery and treatment option to their loved ones in a calm, professional manner.
Each Intervention is Unique
Our experience has taught us that each family and intervention is unique.
At New Start Recovery Solutions Northern California drug and alcohol rehab centers, we work very closely with the family and their loved ones. New Start Recovery Solutions provides professional pre-intervention counseling and planning for the intervention. Many families or groups who go through an intervention were not seeking that out initially.
Usually, people are simply at the end of their rope and desperate to get back loved ones they are losing to addiction. While loved ones see the signs of progressing addiction, the person who is abusing is not usually ready to admit they have a problem. Our multiple rehabilitation centers in California are ready to help your loved ones make the necessary strides to a cleaner, sober lifestyle.
Interventions can serve as a rallying point for families that are dedicated to helping a loved one achieve sobriety and wellness.

Intervention Planning Needed
An intervention is a well thought-out process and plan that can mean the difference between life and death for an addict or alcoholic in crisis. The purpose of an intervention is to get your friend or loved one to the point where he or she will accept help and enter into an addiction treatment program. An addiction intervention is a powerful tool, and interventions work more often than not.
People who struggle with addiction are usually in denial about their situation and unwilling to seek treatment. Intervention helps the person make the connection between their use of alcohol and drugs and the problems in their life. The goal of intervention is to present the alcohol or drug user with a structured opportunity to accept help and to make changes before their life situation gets even worse.

After Intervention: Drug and Alcohol Detox
You (or your friend or loved one) have resolved to stop using drugs or alcohol. Congratulations! This is the first step to regaining sobriety and the importance cannot be underestimated.
Now, detox from the addictive substance/s must occur. Recovery support begins with detox from drugs and alcohol. The right detox program helps individuals through physical withdrawal symptoms and provides the medical assistance needed during this rough time.
Why Medical Detox?
If the alcohol or drug use has been heavy – or has been occurring for a long period of time – we recommend medical detox. In medical detox, the individual will enter an addiction rehab center. In the center, the withdrawal and detox will be closely monitored by medical professionals. If medication is needed during detox, it will be prescribed and supervised by a medical doctor (MD).
Withdrawal from drugs and alcohol is a serious condition that occurs rapidly. If not managed correctly, detox can become life threatening. This is why a safe and secure detox program is the most important start to treating addiction.
At our Northern California drug and alcohol rehab center locations – medical detox is designed to provide our patients with support they need. Recovery support continues with integrated and holistic addiction rehab to give those addicted the foundation and tools to begin to live a clean and sober life.
Quitting on Your Own Can Be Harmful
The severity of the effects of self-detox will differ depending on the individual’s history of abuse and medical/physical conditions.
However, the risks of detox for drug and alcohol users can be dangerous enough that a detox should never be attempted alone. A sudden stop of drug and alcohol use can lead to seizures, heart attacks and strokes. And in severe cases – even death.
Addiction Withdrawal Dangerous Symptoms
If attempting to withdraw from drugs or alcohol on your own, it is imperative to identify danger signs and symptoms of withdrawal early. If any of these symptoms are experienced, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
Here are some drug and alcohol withdrawal warning signs:
- Difficulty breathing
- Excessive sweating
- Excessive nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Tremors
- Confusion/depression
- Fear, paranoia

Importance of Co-occurring Disorders (Dual Diagnosis) Addiction Treatment
According to SAMHSA’s 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) (PDF | 3.4 MB), approximately 7.9 million adults in the United States had co-occurring disorders (dual diagnosis) in 2014.
Individuals with co-occurring disorders are best served through integrated addiction treatment. With integrated treatment, practitioners can address mental and substance use disorders at the same time; providing better addiction recovery outcomes.
If you or a loved one are suffering from addiction – as well as PTSD, depression, trauma or other mental health issue: Please know that help is available to provide comprehensive, holistic and integrated addiction rehab treatment.
