“Addiction experts estimate that between 75% and 90% of alcoholics are high-functioning. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism categorized alcoholics into 5 subtypes: only 9% are of the “chronic severe” subtype, fitting the stereotype of the low-bottom alcoholic.” From Psychology Today, Characteristics of High-Functioning Alcoholics
Functional Alcoholism and Functional Addiction are Health and Career Thieves
Functional addicts and alcoholics sincerely believe they are ok, everything is great – and that they can go on abusing drugs and/or alcohol indefinitely. This strategy works until the day it no longer works: When the addict or alcoholic is hospitalized with liver failure or other serious health condition.
Or even worse, when the addict or alcoholic makes a judgement error that causes injury to self or others.

FADAP.org – Flight Attendant Drug and Alcohol Program
Recovery is Not a Hard Landing
Canyon Vista Recovery Center is proud to be a part of the Flight Attendant Drug and Alcohol Program, fadap.org.
Drinking is a behavior that is woven into many societies; and even into our professional career.
Flight attendants are accustomed to getting to our overnight destination, getting out of our uniform – and heading to the closest alcohol-serving establishment. As flight attendants, having an adult refreshment is something we deserve and have earned after a long day accommodating everyone’s needs.
But it really can become difficult to see when our drinking just might have crossed the line from social or moderate drinking to problem drinking. If you consume alcohol simply to feel good, or avoid feeling bad, then your drinking could become problematic.
Alcohol Consumption FAQs
What is Functional Alcoholism?
The ‘functional alcoholic subtype‘ are least like the stereotypical alcoholic. They are often well-educated with stable jobs and families.
Functional alcoholism is hidden from all but the immediate family. Because high-functioning alcoholics generally see no problems with their drinking – they are unlikely to seek help on their own.
The families of functional alcoholics, however, experience the full consequences of living with an alcoholic.
Functional alcoholics seem ‘fine’ to co-workers, friends and extended family. Family members seeking validation and support from family friends or extended family for their suspicions about possible alcoholism will usually find no assistance.
Family, Friends, and Co-workers as Enablers
Friends, co-workers and extended family members may make excuses for the behavior they experience and spin it so it sounds reasonable.
- “He still drinks like he did in college, but he goes to work every day.”
- “She can drink more than anyone I know, but she never seems drunk.”
- “He’s a happy drunk.”
- “She doesn’t drink at work, and it’s not my business what she does on her own time.”
