History of Veterans Day
The Origins of Veterans Day
Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919 – which was the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

From History.com Veteran’s Day Facts
- Veterans Day occurs on November 11 every year in the United States.
- This is in honor of the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918 that signaled the end of World War I.
- This date is known as Armistice Day.
- In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
- In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, which moved the celebration of Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975 President Gerald Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11, due to the important historical significance of the date.
- Veterans Day commemorates veterans of all wars.
- Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World War I and World War II on or near November 11th: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November).
- In Europe, Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11.
- Every Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day, Arlington National Cemetery holds an annual memorial service. The cemetery is home to the graves of over 400,000 individuals; most of whom served in the military.
What is the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?
Veterans Day is intended to thank all those who honorably served in the military – in war time or peace.
Memorial Day is for remembering and honoring military personnel who died while in service of their country; particularly those who died in battle or as a result of a wound sustained in battle.
Back to topDid you know? Red poppies, a symbol of World War I from their appearance in the beloved poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae, are sold in Canada and the United Kingdom on Remembrance Day to raise money for veterans or worn in the lapel as a tribute.

Things To Know About Veterans Day
From https://www.military.com/veterans-day
Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.
Today we know the day as “Veterans Day.” But until 1954 – it was known as Armistice Day.
Armistice Day officially recognized the armistice agreement that ended WWI on Nov. 11, 1918. Even though WWI was hopefully termed “the war to end all wars,” it was not. By 1954 Americans had served in both WWII and the Korean War.
Veterans Day is a Federal Holiday
Veterans Day is a federal holiday, a bank holiday and, in most states, a state holiday. That means that federal employees, including military members, are typically given the day off and, in most states, state workers are as well.

Veterans and PTSD: Hypervigilance, Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions
See details at What is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is triggered by the trauma of experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. PTSD symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety – as well as uncontrollable or intrusive thoughts about the event.
Emotional and psychological trauma occurs when extraordinarily stressful events shatter an individual’s usual sense of security. As a result, there is a feeling of being temporarily helpless in a dangerous world.
Most people who experience traumatic events have temporary difficulty adjusting and coping. If trauma symptoms get worse – or last more than 3 months and interfere with day-to-day functioning – you may have PTSD.

PTSD Self-Medication
Veterans often use alcohol or drugs to self-medicate PTSD symptoms. This does nothing to resolve the underlying trauma – and usually makes it much worse.

PTSD + Substance or Alcohol Abuse = Dual Diagnosis
Dual diagnosis refers to a mental disorder (PTSD, trauma, anxiety, depression, etc) existing at the same time with substance abuse or alcohol abuse.
Integrated treatment for individuals with dual diagnosis has been found to be consistently superior compared with separate treatment of each diagnosis.
PTSD is an established risk factor for developing a substance abuse disorder. Many individuals with severe, mild, or even sub-clinical mental disorders may use drugs as a form of self-medication to alleviate unpleasant symptoms of the mental disorder.
When an individual develops a mental illness, associated changes in brain activity increase the vulnerability for substance abuse and alcohol abuse. Mental illness (including anxiety and PTSD) causes changes in the brain that enhance the rewarding effects of drugs and alcohol. In addition, awareness of the negative effects are reduced.
Although drugs or alcohol may temporarily reduce symptoms of PTSD or mental illness – substance abuse ultimately makes mental disorder symptoms worse.
